7th Grade Social Studies

  • Colonization: Students will be learning about the Spanish, French, and British colonization in the Americas as well as the impact on indigenous people. We will focus primarily on the British 13 colonies and conduct a deep dive into Jamestown and the New England Colonies.
  • Revolutionary War: Students will learn about the building tension between the British colonists and King George III and the causes of the Revolutionary War. Students will create a group project about the war and comparing it to a modern day event.
  • African Slave Trade: Students will be learning about the atrocities of the African Slave Trade and the 400 years of slavery in the United States. Students will create projects in a Student Museum that explores these atrocities and the cruelty placed upon an entire race of people.
  • Westward Expansion: Students will understand how the United States acquired the land west of the Appalachian Mountains and how the United States decided to expand, including the impact on the Native Americans. We will also discuss the Oregon Trail, the Mexican American War, and the California Gold Rush.
  • Road to Civil War: As the United States expanded west, more states were added to the Union. Students will learn about the impact on slavery and the growing tension between the North and the South on the topic.
  • Civil War: Students will learn how the South separated from the Union in order to keep the institution of slavery alive. We will look at major battles and the impact of the Emancipation Proclamation. We will finish the year on Lincoln's assassination.
  • Reconstruction:Using Facing History and Ourselves, students will participate in a deep dive of the aftermath of Reconstruction. Students will understand the complexities of putting the country back together, the increase and backlash of African American rights, and the failure to solidify equality postwar. Students will create a photo essay presentation to describe the events during this period.
  • Industrial Revolution: Student will learn about the rise in machines and using natural resources en mass. This will lead to understanding the rise in Big Business and deciding what is the responsibility of the wealthy in regards to society and their workers.
  • Progressive Era: Students will understand how the Industrial Revolution led to political corruption and social issues that were impacting the nation. Students will learn about ordinary citizens taking a stand and working to make the country a better society. Students will also learn about propaganda and the Spanish Ameri
