Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!
This year third graders will enhance their mathematics foundation and move toward more consistent use of mental computation. Key areas of study include place value, rounding numbers, developing fluency with multiplication and division facts, area, time, money, solid shapes, lines, angles, congruence, and addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals using manipulatives. Experimentation, simulation, modeling, extending patterns, and logical deduction processes expand problem solving capabilities. Students relate mathematics to other areas of curriculum and identify real life applications of mathematics concepts, such as making change, telling time, and reading thermometers.
In Grade 4, instructional time will focus on three critical areas: (1) developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends; (2) developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers; (3) understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.
