A Little Bit about Mrs. Rewers

I am happy to report that this is my 12th year teaching and my 9th year at James Ward, during which time I have taught 6-8th grade reading and for the past several years, 7-8th grade literacy.  My undergraduate degree in English (along with a minor in general communications) was earned at Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO (it is now called Truman State University).  I spent the first 15 years of my working life in the advertising industry, but realized my heart was in working with children.  I earned a Master of Arts in Teaching (Elementary Education) from National Louis University in Chicago.  I am endorsed to teach middle school Language Arts and Mathematics and I most recently earned my endorsement in English as a Second Language instruction. I have a passion for reading and rereading texts and learning something new each time I revisit a book.  I try my best to bring some of that same passion to the students with whom I spend my days.

I like to consider myself a lifelong learner.  In addition to two degrees, I completed my endorsement to teach English as a Second Language two year ago.  I find this to help me better serve our English language learner population.  Just this summer, I participated in a study group using the Notice & Note signposts to help students gain a deeper understanding of all texts they read.  I look forward to bringing this learning to my classes this year.

Finally, as I started teaching, I also became a parent and now have two growing children, Will in 6th grade and Ellis in 3rd grade, who are students at James Ward.  I treasure my role as both teacher and parent at James Ward.  I am proud of our school, its accomplishments, and most importantly the people who make up this wonderful community of learners.  When Iā€™m not devoting time to my students, I enjoy crocheting, baking, watching my son play travel baseball, learning out to use an Instant Pot, and spending time with my husband and children exploring Chicago or playing the Game of Life.  I hope that by sharing some of my story, you will feel comfortable sharing your stories with me.
